This carpet comes from the northern Iranian city of Tabriz, capital of East Azerbaijan Province. The vibrant metropolis has a 500-year-old tradition of carpet-weaving: the old-established urban manufactories used to produce large carpets for magnificent palaces. In Tabriz, different cultures meet; the variety of patterns and qualities is particularly great here. The highest-quality examples are very finely knotted, with a short pile of particularly soft wool and silk contours accentuating the individual motifs.
